THE Knutsford and District Amateur League has announced the death of its president, Sid Jones, at the age of 99.
He passed away on Thursday.
“Sid epitomised all that’s good about our game – dignity, competitiveness and sociability,” said league secretary Tony Crompton in a statement.
Jones had never picked up a cue before playing snooker for the first time at 32.
He was taught the basics by his brother, a talented billiards player.
Following a move to High Legh in 1960, he joined the league as a player at Mere before later turning out for teams representing Knutsford clubs Liberal, Bowling and Conservative.
Jones took over as president in 1978, succeeding Frank Ward, and played on until he was 95.
Champions Mobberley A are 11 points clear at the Division One summit following a 6-1 win at Wilmslow Cons A.
Second-placed Alderley Union, boosted by a 40-plus break from Dave Whalley, saw off Brook Street A.
Shaw Heath rise to third after struggling back-markers Morley conceded their scheduled encounter, while Mobberley B brushed aside Tatton.
Wilmslow RBL occupy top spot in Division Two following a 6-1 win against Mobberley D, while closest-rivals Mobberley C and Wilmslow Cons B managed slender victories on aggregate against Mere A and Mere C respectively.
