Egerton 4 Pilkington 1
AT the seventh attempt, Egerton have at last recorded a victory in the Cheshire League this season.
And Yellows were convincing victors too, rising from the bottom of the League One table as a reward.
“It was a great win – we couldn’t fault the boys’ effort,” said head coach Ryan Routley.
The hosts took the lead when Aaron Best scored his second goal of the campaign to complete a slick passing move.
Their cause was helped when Pilkington defender Joey Alexander was then sent off as a punishment for receiving two cautions in quick succession.
Egerton capitalized, doubling their lead when Ashley Wells finished calmly after skillfully creating space for a shot.
They continued to make the running after the interval, although the visitors halved their arrears when Graham Boylan slotted in stylishly following a counter attack that exploited a lack of numbers in defence.
Wells restored a two-goal advantage for Yellows when he converted a corner taken by Chris Trowbridge with a clever touch at the near post.
Substitute Aaron Kelly was left then unmarked in the penalty area to steer in a fourth goal before the final whistle.
Routley said: “We played some nice football for a lot of the game, with Chris [Trowbridge] and Ashley [Wells] both impressing on the wing.
“We asked Andrew Brown to play a different role, but he was brilliant again and carried a threat on the ball.”
He will be hoping for a repeat when the teams meet again on Saturday, this time for a group-stage fixture in the JA Walton Challenge Cup.
Oliver Hewitt scored both goals for Egerton’s under 21s in a 5-2 defeat at home to Malvern on Sunday.
