Knutsford and District Lions Club by Frances Miller

Knutsford and District Lions are busy preparing for their annual fundraising concert which will be held on October 2 at the Methodist Church. There will be performances by local Knutsford singer/songwriter Jill Fogden, and acoustic duo, Breeze & Wilson with proceeds going to local Lions charities.

Members recently helped out at the Community Spirit Fun Day and the Friends of the Moor Play Day where a good time was had by all. The Young Leaders in Service scheme, launched last November in conjunction with the town council, continues to develop with nearly 30 children now taking part.

Members will be joined by partners and friends for an amble followed by lunch at a local hostelry this weekend and an evening with members of the Rotary Club of Knutsford has been arranged for later in the year.

Over Peover WI by Viv Cunningham

Over Peover WI members have been very active recently, joining in with walks at Redesmere and The Peovers including a rather civilised stop for a picnic. A trip to Bodnant Gardens with afternoon tea had been fun. Members were looking forward to the August Social evening at the English Dining Room at Withington.

They enjoyed a lovely garden meeting with visitors from Ollerton, Byley, Boothsmere and Cranford. Wonderful refreshments from the committee and pretty table flowers enhanced the meeting. Janet Appleby from the Cheshire Ice Cream Farm gave a talk entitled 'Children and Ice Cream' she served samples of some of the delicious varieties they produce.

Other talks recently have included Hugh Davies on 'Women as Spies' which made everyone grateful for the heroic deeds and general bravery of these women during both world wars. 'Sweet Memories' was an enthusiastic and amusing history of sweets from Janet Bradshaw of Tatton Hall.

Members did very well at the Cheshire Show, Jan Green and Rosalind Jackson won first prizes, Angela Eccles won second, Helen Skelton third and Julia Jackson and Helen Norbury were highly commended.

Over Peover and other WI's have produced an exhibition at the Knutsford Heritage Centre showing a history of the WI to celebrate the centenary. Members are on duty as stewards at the Centre during the summer exhibition.
