AN ‘inspirational’ teacher, who has been a part of Knutsford High School for more than 35 years, is set to retire.

Jan Chambers, the head of sixth form, will leave the school on July 16 and she says she hopes she has passed on her love of literature to her pupils.

The Highland Way resident joined the school in May 1975 and has taught English literature in Knutsford for 20 years.

“Literature is one of the biggest pleasures of my life,” said Ms Chambers.

“I love teaching English literature because one year is never the same as the other because the texts are different.”

Ms Chamber’s favourite classic author is Jane Austen and she is also a fan of Ian McEwan.

But she is also delighted that the town was home to Victorian author Elizabeth Gaskell.

“It’s interesting living in Knutsford,” added Ms Chambers.

“I always encourage students to read books with a Cheshire connection.”

Ms Chambers said she has seen the teacher’s role change during her 35 years.

She said: “Teachers used to be the sage on the stage. The modern way now is that teachers are facilitators and hardly visible – but that’s not me.

“I’m a didactic teacher and I hope that’s inspired my students.”

Stephen Cunliffe, deputy head teacher of Knutsford High School, has worked with Ms Chambers for 12 years.

He said: “Jan is something of an institution in the school, and will be sadly missed by staff and students alike.

“It is hard to imagine school without her. She has been an inspirational teacher.

“Her joie de vivre is apparent in her whole manner – Jan brings a smile to everyone's face.

“She is a true professional, putting her students at the heart of all she does.”

Ms Chambers, who wanted to be a teacher from the age of 11, said: “Knutsford High School has been a wonderful place since day one and I’m immensely fortunate to have worked there.

“I will miss my colleagues, the students and the general buzz of the place but I will survive on happy, happy memories.”

Ms Chambers says she will be using her spare time to travel with her husband Dave, visit her son John in London, learn to play the piano and join a bridge club.
