A MOBBERLEY man is the new Lord Lieutenant for Cheshire.

The Queen has appointed David Briggs, making him Her Majesty’s representative in the county.

He takes over the post on Sunday, March 7, following the retirement of Sir William Bromley Davenport who has held the position for almost 20 years.

Mr Briggs, 63, said: “I am hugely honoured and very surprised to be appointed Lord-Lieutenant. Sir William has done a magnificent job over the last 20 years and he is a very hard act to follow.

“I welcome the opportunity given to me as Her Majesty’s representative to acknowledge and celebrate all that is good and distinctive about Cheshire – be it the immense contribution made through volunteering or the success of Cheshire businesses both large and small.

“From Crewe to Warrington, from Ellesmere Port to Macclesfield, Cheshire is a superb county.

“It has faced many challenges in the past, and to some extent still does so. Its strength lies in its people and its communities. I and my deputy lieutenants will do all that we can to continue to support them.”

David was educated at Charterhouse School and then at St Andrews University where he received an LL.B. with first-class honours.

He qualified as a Barrister in 1970 and later won a Thouron Scholarship to study Business management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the USA where he received an MBA.

He was High Sheriff of Cheshire in 2006/7 and has for many years been engaged in a number of charitable activities.

He is currently Cheshire chairman of the council of the Order of St John having been involved with St John Ambulance for 35 years and was chairman of Warrington Youth Club from 1981 to 2006 and remains a director.

He supports a number of other charities – including the Prince’s Trust, where he is a member of the north west leadership team.

In recognition of these activities he was awarded an MBE and also an honorary MA by University of Chester in 2009.

He is managing director of Warrington-based Dawsons Music Ltd which has become one of the largest retailers of musical instruments in the country and of the Bolton-based confectionery manufacturer Maxilin Ltd.
