THE M6 is likely to remain closed northbound into the evening following a serious crash involving a van and a lorry.
National Highways has warned that the carriageway between junction 23 at Haydock and junction 24 for Ashton-in-Makerfield is expected to remain shut throughout the day and into the evening.
Emergency resurfacing works are being carried out following the crash, which happened shortly before 10pm on Sunday, October 18.

The crash involved a van and a lorry, with one of the vehicles catching fire.
National Highways said the fire caused significant damage to the road surface, alongside a large fuel spillage.
Police collision investigators worked at the scene throughout the night and into Monday morning, with the motorway initially closed in both directions.
The southbound carriageway reopened at around 7.30am on Monday, October 19.
However, extensive resurfacing work is now required on the northbound side.
National Highways said lanes one, two and three require full resurfacing, while lane four must also remain closed until the works are completed for safety reasons.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and consider rerouting or delaying travel if possible.
