A NUMBER of Mid Cheshire pubs are among the best in the region for real ale according to The Campaign for Real Ale's Good Beer Guide.

Knutsford, Wilmslow and the surroundings are on the list of more than 4,500 pubs across the country including dozens of pubs in Cheshire.

Wilmslow's Railway Inn is one of hundreds of new entries nationwide while all of the other entries were also in last year's Good Beer Guide.

This is the list:

  • Alderley Edge Union Club, Stevens Street, Alderley Edge, SK9 7NL
  • Coach and Four, Alderley Road, Wilmslow, SK9 1PA
  • Railway Inn, Station Road, Mobberley, WA16 6LA
  • Victoria Club, Victoria Avenue, Holmes Chapel, CW4 7BE
  • Wallop, King Street, Knutsford, WA16 6ED

Included in this year's Good Beer Guide is a call for 'Big Beer's' domination of the beer market to come to an end.

CAMRA's chairman Ash Corbett-Collins has called for an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority.

Its introduction is by the award-winning author Sir Ian Rankin who is famous for the fictional detective John Rebus.

He said: "What makes the perfect pub? Ask 50 people and you might get 50 different answers... My preferences might not be yours but there are a few things we can probably agree on.

"We want the beer to be good and the welcome to be friendly. We want to see signs that the bar represents the best of its community or its neighbourhood. We want to feel like we fit in."
