WINSFORD Town Council’s by-election was a close run fight with fewer than 60 votes between the two candidates.

In the vote on Thursday, May 2, Labour’s Stuart Bingham was elected as one of three town councillors for Over ward, alongside Salt of the Earth independents, Pauline Fitzsimmons and Jane Hulmston.

The runner up, Liberal Democrat Charlie Parkinson, took 420 votes to Cllr Bingham’s 477.

Just 17.3 per cent of eligible voters took part in the election, Mr Parkinson described as ‘very low’.

Cllr Bingham, who is also a Cheshire West and Chester (CWAC) councillor for Over and Verdin Ward, took to social media to thanks those who voted, and to set out his intentions for his term.

He said: “I’m delighted to have won yesterday’s by-election and to be returning to Winsford Town Council to represent the residents of Over.

“With 30 years of public service behind me, I take every role seriously, which is why my campaign promises were to always seek the best for Winsford and to be a dependable councillor.

“I would like to thank everyone who took part, and the election staff who ensured people could have their say. I am immensely grateful for the faith residents have shown in me and in the Labour Party.

“I would also like to thank Labour members who joined me knocking on doors, delivering leaflets, and talking to residents. The strength of Labour campaigns is in listening to communities, working as a team, and delivering our message of hope.

“Winsford is a fantastic town with brilliant people, and I want to play my part in delivering a brighter future for all residents.

Mr Parkinson also took to social media after the election result was declared, where he promised to keep on scrutinising CWAC’s controlling Labour group.

He said: “Firstly, can I thank all my supporters in the Over ward for your efforts, which were very much appreciated.

“At the count in Ellesmere Port, I congratulated Cllr Bingham on his victory, and I will carry on holding the Labour Party to account at future meetings.”
