EX-Tranmere Rovers player Alex Hay completed an incredible two marathon challenge at the weekend in aid of people living with cancer.

His first run, on Saturday, April 20, began at Clatterbridge Hospital's Cancer Charity Department, before running along the peninsula twice and finishing at Prenton Park ahead of Tranmere's home game v AFC Wimbledon.

On Sunday, he was among more than 50,000 people taking part in the London Marathon.

The inspiration for his '2 in 2' marathon challenge was dad Joe, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year and is receiving treatment.

Alex had originally planned to raise £2,000 for charity but thanks to the public and Tranmere Rovers' supporters' "incredible generosity" the total, so far, stands at £6,500.

The 42-year-old from Wirral, who played for Tranmere from 1999 to 2004, told the Globe: "I'm in a world of pain right now, having done two marathons in two days, but it has all been more than worth all of the hard work and training that went into it.

"The support from my family, friends and the community on both days was fantastic.

"It was lovely running through Wirral, taking in the sights and raising funds for a charity that is so close to my heart.

"Saturday was really emotional; my dad was there with close family members when I got to Prenton Park.

"I last did thee London Marathon in 2022 and my fiancée Lisa had put me in the ballot for the London Marathon last year, so I had no idea I was up for it again until the confirmation came through."

Praising dad Joe's "positive spirit", Alex said: "He has undergone chemotherapy and is now on a trial trying to slow the cancer down and he is still being positive. This has inspired me to not only go again, but to do more.

"His attitude of, 'I am not dying of cancer, I am living with cancer', is pushing me further.

"This has been, and still is, a very difficult time for me and all of my family.

"Treating cancer patients entails so many sacrifices by so many people that I feel this is the time to give something back.

"The Wirral and Merseyside is my home, my safe place, and I see all the good that Clatterbridge Cancer Hospital does in the area and beyond. We all sadly know someone who has been treated there and the care that has been given.

"A number of my work colleagues have had family members treated there recently and have spoken very highly of the support and care they have received from Clatterbridge Cancer Hospital."

Praising the public's support, Alex said: "This was my opportunity again to use my lucky platform of being a super proud Tranmere fan and ex-professional player to help the local area and people.

"I understand how difficult it is in current times for people to put food on their table and heating in the house so whatever small donation can be made will make the difference.

"Cancer has and will touch us all in some way.

"We only beat it together and this will be a tiny step to help so many in our amazing communities, let's support them together."
