A WILMSLOW man who caused ‘irreversible’ injuries by crashing head-on into an oncoming car while overtaking on a blind bend has been jailed.

Kane Wilkins’ victim, a man, suffered life-changing injuries including a fractured sternum, internal haemorrhaging, a punctured and collapsed lung, seven broken ribs, a lacerated liver, two spinal fractures, and a broken and dislocated wrist.

Wilkins, of Howty Close, was driving on the A54 Buxton Road towards Bosley at around 7am on September 2, 2022, when he tried to overtake a car travelling about 30mph, despite clear road markings which ban it.

A witness in the car he tried to pass said the 27-year-old couldn’t have known the road was clear, due to the sharp left-hand bend and high hedges on both sides of the road.

The witness said he saw Wilkins' Vauxhall Insignia pull over to the wrong side of the road a split second before the two cars collided head on.

The victim didn’t lose consciousness despite his injuries, and described the sensation of not being able to breathe as ‘the most terrifying experience of his life’ as he ‘believed he was doing to die’.

Wilkins suffered serious injuries himself, and was heard explaining to police at the scene - ‘I’m the k******d driving on the wrong side of the road’.

Tests showed he hadn’t been drinking, but came back positive for cannabis, though he was below the legal limit of two micrograms per litre of blood.

He admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Crewe Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, March 5, this year, and the case was sent to Chester Crown Court for sentencing on Tuesday, April 2.

Prosecuting, Karl Scholz described Wilkins’ victim’s injuries as ‘appalling’, adding his working life ‘had been brought to a premature end’.

Mr Scholz added this has had a ‘profound’ impact on his ability to make money, and he now has serious concerns about later life, from both a health and a financial perspective.

Defending, Emma Clarke said her client had made ‘full and frank admissions at the roadside’, and had expressed ‘genuine remorse’.

“He is fully aware the risk he took that day has had a profound impact on others, and he sincerely apologises for the financial and physical harm caused to the victim and his family.”

She added Wilkins has ‘a stable lifestyle and a supportive family network,’ as well as an eight-year-old child who will be impacted if their father loses his liberty.

“He is not a man the court is likely to see ever again,” she added.

Passing sentence, Judge Patrick Thompson said: “You performed an incredibly dangerous manoeuvre on what was effectively a blind bend, resulting in a head-on collision at speed.

“This resulted in an innocent person suffering permanent and irreversible injuries.

“It is all so sad, so unnecessary, and just so avoidable.”

Judge Thompson sentenced Wilkins to 28 months in prison. He was also banned from driving for four years and two months, and will be forced to take an extended re-test before he can get his licence back.
