TRIBUTES have been paid to a 'selfless' founding member of a football club who took his own life.

John Nugent, one of the founders of Wilmslow Town FC, was found dead at his home on September 20 last year.

A written inquest into the dad-of-two's death was heard by senior coroner for Cheshire Jacqueline Devonish at Warrington Coroner's Court on Wednesday (February 21).

The court heard the 59-year-old, a business consultant from Wilmslow, had left a note on the day of his death.

Assistant coroner Elizabeth Wheeler, who conducted the inquest, ruled John's death to be suicide, citing the cause to be asphyxiation.

John, who was a 'key figure' in the founding of Wilmslow Town, devoted nine years of service to the club as its first secretary.

Following the news of his death, the club issued a heartfelt tribute to John who made an 'immense contribution to the community and grassroots football in Wilmslow'.

A club spokesman said: "John was a key figure in the formation of Wilmslow Town in 2008 and served as the club’s first secretary from its formation until 2017 when he resigned following nine years of selfless service.

“John was a loving husband, father, brother and son. Everybody at Wilmslow Town sends their most sincere condolences to his wife, Helen, son, Jamie, and the rest of the Nugent family.

“John will be fondly remembered by many of our members, all of whom can reflect on his immense contribution to the community and grassroots football in Wilmslow.”
