In 1989, he decided to launch his own estate agency, Gascoigne Halman. The business grew throughout the 1990s ending the decade with 14 offices.

The company was acquired by Connells in 2015 but John remains very much at the helm of the operation.

John said: “When you name is above the door, you can never really walk away.”

Today, the company boasts a network of offices across Cheshire, south Manchester and the High Peaks, offering expertise in sales, lettings and mortgages.

Developing client and staff relationships has been the cornerstone Gascoigne Halman’s success, with a theme of continual professional development running throughout the agency.

Client satisfaction is monitored monthly and is so high, 98 to 100 percent, John often jokes at the figures look made up.

Peter Higham, managing director of Gascoigne Halman, said: “John is a hugely respected and admired member of the property community and it was superb to see his commitment to estate agency celebrated by the industry. “John’s passion for property has never wavered and has seen Gascoigne Halman grow from a single office in Wilmslow in 1989 to 22 offices and over 200 staff today.

“His dedication to outstanding service and innovation is hugely inspirational to our team and has ensured Gascoigne Halman remains so successful.” John’s philanthropic approach to business has seen Gascoigne Halman raise almost £100,000 for charities over the years including the David Lewis Centre, The Christie Hospital, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity and three local hospices.

Awarded a gold award with honours for sales and a gold award with honours for lettings at the Estate Agency Masters Awards 2023, Gascoigne Halman is one of the top estate agencies in the country.
