CREATIVE children have designed posters to celebrate the arrival of Santa.

Christmas lights will be switched on in Handforth on Saturday, November 25.

Festivities include a mini market in The Paddock from 2pm until 5pm, with a variety of stalls including community organisations.

Father Christmas will be making an appearance with his sleigh, offering children the chance to visit him in the grotto.

Donkeys will also be taking part in the festivities.

Entertainment will include children's choirs from Handforth Grange School and St Benedict's School.

The lights will be switched on at around 4.30pm.

Winners of the of the children's poster competition will accompany special guests.

Local heroes from the uniformed services and mini heroes from both primary schools will be honoured.

Each year Handforth Town Council runs a poster competition for children who attend the primary schools in Handforth.

Cllr Susan Moore, chairman of Handforth Town Council, said "This year children at St Benedict's RC Primary School took part in the competition.

“We decided to award a first, second and third prize to the winners.”

Winners will receive a gift voucher and have the honour of pressing the big button to light up Handforth and mark the start of the Christmas period.

This year’s winners of the competition were chosen by members of the Always Active Group at Handforth Youth Centre.

Town councillors Susan Moore and Cynthia Samson will attend an assembly at St Benedict's School on Wednesday, November 15 to present the prizes.

A selection of posters created by the children will be displayed around the village to promote the Christmas lights switch on.
