A range of awards, accolades and quality marks have been given to The King’s School in Macclesfield since the start of the year, reflecting both the school’s academic and sporting achievements.

The co-ed independent school in Macclesfield is the first school in the country to be awarded a Gold Award for the quality of pupil learning.

The award is the culmination of eight years’ work with The Learning Organisation (TLO) to embed teaching methods in the secondary school that enhance pupils' reasoning, resilience and questioning skills. Overseen by King’s deputy head, Mr Griffiths, the philosophy adheres to the Martin Luther King doctrine, "Intelligence plus character; that is the goal of true education," which is emblazoned in the entrance hall.

Mr Griffiths said: "Our ethos isn't just about pupils getting good examination results, but rather a preparation for university and life beyond their formal education. We want to instil skills that will serve them throughout the rest of their lives."

The aim is to improve the pupils' independent learning, ensuring they think and discover for themselves, rather than learn by mere repetition.

Results speak for themselves and there has been a significant year-on-year improvement as the new methods have taken hold.

This was recognised nationally in January when King’s was listed in The Sunday Times Top 10 Independent Schools in the North West for academic results. The Parent Power Guide 2023 put King’s in 7th position, amongst the very best performing schools in the region. In 2022, a remarkable 20% of all A-level grades at King’s were at grade A* and 52% of all grades were A* or A.

The school is currently enjoying a ‘golden age’ of sporting success and a recent league table of schools in School Sport Magazine saw King’s feature in the Top 25 schools across the country for achievements across all sporting disciplines. The school’s current U13 boys’ cricket team are the reigning National Champions, a title not won by a Cheshire school for over 40 years, and they are hoping to maintain the title this summer.

Significant successes have also been notched up at regional and national in netball, girls’ hockey, boys’ hockey, trampolining and rugby.

For families considering joining the King’s School in Macclesfield in September 2024, places are currently available for the Year 5 Taster Day on Friday 30 June and can be booked online.
