A TRAIN ticket bought at Goostrey station has been discovered 78 years after it was issued.

The unusual item turned up at an online auction 136 miles from home and was snapped up to add to the collection of Goostrey Parish Archive.

The season ticket was purchased in 1944 by a member of the Cumberbirch family who lived at Brookside Farm.

It was for half price travel on a journey between Goostrey and Wilmslow.

It was spotted by archivist Jenny Walker on sale in Watford by a dealer but how it has survived and how it travelled so far is an intriguing story still to be explored.

The ticket will be added to material from the late Cumberbirch family already kept in the archive at the Village Hall.

Jenny said: "I often look for items being sold online for the archive and certainly this is the most unusual.

"It is amazing how it has survived so long.

“It cost £3 to buy which is many times more than the 14 shillings it cost then but in today's values it is equivalent to £24.89p"

While she was buying the ticket, she also noticed a postcard dated 1912 of St Luke's Parish Church, Goostrey.

However, this was bought by a collector for more than £15 before she could make a bid.
