TATTON Liberal Democrats have selected their candidate for the next General Election.

Jonathan Smith, 70, who stood for the party in the 2019 election, hopes to become the constituency’s new MP.

Chairman Gareth Wilson said: “I’m delighted Jonathan has once again been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Tatton.

“In 2019, we ran a fantastic campaign and his experience in health and social care is exactly what we need in Parliament to resolve the current NHS crisis.”

In 2019, the Liberal Democrats achieved one of the best results across the north west in Tatton.

Jonathan increased the party’s vote by 74 per cent and the percentage of the total vote almost doubled from nine per cent to almost 16 per cent.

Jonathan, who has lived in Bowdon for almost 30 years, said: “We realise that to seek to replicate what was seen in those constituencies, with similar Tory majorities to that in Tatton, is ambitious.

“My message to the voters of Tatton is, it doesn’t have to be this way.

“You don’t have to put up, anymore, with an MP representing a discredited party and a shameful Government. “

Jonathan sings in a local choir and says he often shops in Knutsford and Wilmslow.

“I believe that I have demonstrated that I really care about the people of Tatton, in the campaigns that I have been leading or supporting since 2019,” he said.

“I have regularly shared my own views and set out the policies of the Liberal Democrats for people across the area.

“Whenever we get to the General Election, voters in Tatton will have a very clear choice - more of the same, tired politics or a fresh set of attitudes, values and ideas.

“I look forward to continue to put the Liberal Democrat case for change.”
