A VILLAGE pub dating back to 1715 has been named the best in Cheshire.

The Church Inn, Mobberley, will be crowned at the 2022 National Pub & Bar Awards in London in June.

The 18th century Grade II listed inn is one of 15 regional winners.

Altogether 94 pubs will be competing for the national title.

Owner Tim Bird and wife Mary McLoughlin are no strangers to success.

The pub was named best pub in the North West last year and won the national award in 2019.

It is the only pub in Cheshire featured in the Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland 2021.

Such top accolades are all the more remarkable as the pub was saved from closure 10 years ago.

Tim said: “We rescued the pub from closure back in 2012, restored it from a near derelict state and re-opened it in June 2013.

“We always wanted the Church Inn to cook fresh modern British dishes using as many local suppliers as we could.

“Our chefs have cooked with consistent intensity and style for years.

“We are so excited to hear that we have won Best Pub in Cheshire 2022.

“A huge thank you to our team who work hard every day to make The Church Inn the best it can be.”

The couple now own six pubs, including The Bulls Head and Roebuck Inn in Mobberley.

Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which hosts the event, said: “With visitor numbers increasing, it’s more important than ever for operators to deliver a standout service during every visit.

“These 94 county winners are wonderful examples of the brilliance of today’s modern no-trade.

“If you live near one of these sites, make sure you pay them a visit.”
