VISITORS have slammed an increase in weekend parking charges at a Cheshire beauty spot as ‘extortionate’.

Tatton Park has increased the fee from £8 to £9.50 on Saturdays and Sundays.

The park blames the rise on escalating costs and a drastic drop in income during the pandemic.

People have taken to social media to vent their anger.

Questions were asked on how the park could justify the almost 19 per cent increase, which has been described as 'extortionate' and a 'rip off'.

Knutsford residents fear it could cause problems for shoppers and traders as people may opt to park in the adjacent town centre.

Carole Hyde, Tatton Park business development manager, said: “During the pandemic, our ancient parkland deer herd and the rare breed animals at the farm still needed to be fed.

“The upkeep of the gardens couldn’t stop, electricity for the mansion had to be paid, the conservation of the wildlife, trees and meres, along with maintenance of all the listed buildings, still needed to be carried out.

“It costs nearly £5 million each year to ensure this 2,000 acre estate is looked after.

“So every time our visitors pay parkland entry, say hello to our ancient deer herd or stop off for a slice of cake, they are helping to make sure this unique place remains intact for future generations to enjoy.

“The closures and capacity limits imposed during the pandemic have impacted visitor numbers and resulted in lower income than that normally raised, to help run and maintain the whole Tatton Park estate.

“All attraction entry prices will remain the same as last year and a new weekly pass will be available which gives fantastic value for a multitude of visits to the gardens, farm and mansion over any chosen seven day period.

“Visitors to the parkland arriving by car will pay between £6.50 and £9.50 per vehicle, depending upon the date of their visit.

“New family tickets are being introduced to give even more flexibility.

“It’s really important to us that people continue to visit every day and enjoy what we offer in this beautiful place.

“By continuing to invest in conversation and improving the visitor experience, including offering good value for money, we’re hoping to attract our existing visitors back as well as welcoming new visitors for the first time.”

Visitors who book online up to three days in advance can save a further 10 per cent off all admission prices.

Tatton Park is managed and financed by Cheshire East Council on behalf of the National Trust.
