KNUTSFORD has once again been ranked as one of Britain’s leading shopping destinations in new research.

The town has been placed as the nation’s 39th best performing retail locations in a list compiled by retail property consultant Harper Dennis Hobbs.

The town’s architecture and historic buildings, unique location and selection of top quality independent businesses have contributed to is success.

The Guardian asked residents and shopkeepers what they think makes Knutsford so special.

Resident Sandra Curties said: “Community spirit, kindness and a drive to survive and adapt, especially from the independent retailers is one answer.

“Competition is fierce but fantastic customer service, bespoke products, click and collect and a willingness to get involved in local events has helped the town retain its natural charm.”

Keen amateur photographer John Horsely has captured pictures of 144 businesses serving customers in the town’s quaint streets.

John, 70, who has lived in Knutsford for 37 years, said: “I was surprised by the sheer number.

“These are just the faces of independent traders in ground floor shops on the high street and doesn’t include all the restaurants and national chains.”

Local entrepreneur Carl Cookson said: “We are so lucky to have retail shops that have been trading in Knutsford for generations.

“Our shopkeepers are not just selling goods, they are offering something far more valuable.

“It’s the transaction of genuine friendship and camaraderie, a place to share heartfelt concern, often laughing and sometimes shedding tears, reminiscing about the good old days.

“It’s something we all love and can’t do without.

Helen Dufton, who owns the town's oldest century old business Arthur Lee Interiors with sister Vicky Wragg, said "We are a very busy shop with three floors and 18 showrooms.

“We are an experience, a place for people to come and enjoy themselves.

“Knutsford is a lovely unique collection of individual shops like us. It has got a history and a story and has a lovely sense of community and spirit about it.

"Everyone who comes to Knutsford realises it is a little bit different."

John has published pictures of the town’s shopkeepers in a book entitled Faces and Facades – Surviving the Covid-19 Pandemic.
