JUNIOR star Jonah Ashworth has made great progress with his golf since he started playing at the age of two.

Now aged 13 and a student at St Nicholas High School, Hartford, he will be taking a big step forward this year when representing High Legh Park Golf Club at a higher level.

He will take part in the England Golf 2022 Handicap Golfers of the Year competitions.

Jonah, who is a member of the Cheshire boys under 14s squad, qualified by having the best four aggregate scores at his club in their 18-hole stableford and medal competitions during 2021.

He qualified with the best aggregate score when combining the best four net score differentials and is the club winner, while Ann Myers was High Legh’s female winner.

Jonah’s biggest previous success at his club was to win the coveted Junior Belfry Trophy in 2020 after finishing as runner-up in the previous year.

This reduced his handicap from 28 to 21 and it is now 13.1.

Jonah said: “I would like to thank everyone at High Legh for helping me to develop my golf since I began, particularly the coaches and junior organiser Chris McEwan and my dad.

“The club gives great support to junior development allowing them to gain handicaps and enter competitions and win prizes and there are great practice facilities available to help juniors progress and enjoy their golf.

“Golf isn’t easy but it is really addictive and I think that the important thing is to keep it simple and have fun.”
