SINCE lockdown, more than 400,000 women have taken up golf.

And at High Legh Golf Club, a number of female members have been telling of what the club and sport means to them to mark International Women’s Day.

Among those is incoming lady vice-captain Dawn White, who joined after going to the club for dinner with her husband and says doing so has “changed her life.”

“I was inspired by all the lady golfers, all of different ages, socialising and enjoying themselves,” she said.

“I saw a leaflet on the bar advertising free get into golf sessions. Since then I’ve never looked back and my life has changed completely.

“Next year will be my 10th anniversary playing for the ladies’ section at HLGC.

“Over these years, I have gained an amazing number of friends and accomplished many golfing achievements.”

Tomorrow, the club will be hosting a free ladies evening with locally-based three-time European Tour winner Carly Booth.

The evening will start with a session on the driving range, followed by a Q&A and a chance to chat with everyone whilst enjoying a glass of complimentary prosecco. Soft drinks will be available for juniors.

High Legh are supporting the ‘Behind Every Golfer’ campaign, with members talking about what golf means to them and what inspired them to start up the game.

The ladies hope the campaign will help break down the barriers for females wanting to try golf for the first time.

“I was fortunate enough to find one of the most inclusive clubs in the area, where ladies and juniors can compete in the same competitions as men and are encouraged to do so,” incoming lady captain Tracey Taylor said.

“There is a great Ladies Section at the club and so much going on, from 9-hole social supper golf competitions to the Club Championships - there really is something for everyone.”

Junior captain Georgia Taylor added: “I started playing golf at 10 from the inspiration from my Grandad, who also played golf for many years.

“Golf is a great sport to do, to socialise, to improve your resilience and concentration.

“Playing at a High Legh has helped a lot with my confidence, especially as it has enabled me to meet a range of people of all ages and backgrounds.”
