A DRUNK driver has been hit with £416 fine and banned from the roads after crashing into a stone wall and driving off.

Joseph Machin-Smith was driving along Mereside Road in Knutsford on September 28 earlier this year when he collided with and damaged a wall.

The 21-year-old, who was above the legal limit and uninsured at the time, failed to stop following the accident.

A breath test revealed he had 56mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

He was also found to be in possession of quantities of amphetamine and cannabis, both class B drugs.

Appearing at Stockport Magistrates' Court on November 29, Machin-Smith pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal limit for alcohol, driving without insurance, failing to stop after an accident and possession of class B drugs.

Taking his guilty plea into account, magistrates fined Machin-Smith, of Northwich Road, Knutsford, a total of £416 for the driving offences and disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 12 months.

For the drugs offences, he was handed a 12-month conditional discharge while orders were made for the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs.

Machin-Smith was also ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £42 and costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

His driving record was also endorsed.
