THE head coach of an all-female boxing club is hailing a new set of classes aimed at girls aged eight to 16.

Elly Hamilton says the ‘Girls with Gloves’ sessions which take place at Revenge Boxing Cheshire on Denton Drive, Northwich, have been a huge hit since starting up in September.

She hopes that she can inspire girls into the sport from a young age and sees a significant overlap between boxing and mental health.

Elly, from Rudheath, said: “These sessions were launched to provide a safe space for girls where they can grow their self-confidence and belief from a young age.

“It is important for them to be able to use the sport as a channel of any anger or issues they are experiencing.

“Mental health hasn’t been made a priority within schools and local communities for children, especially in the last 18 months with Covid-19.”

In a largely male dominated sport, Elly stressed the need for girls to feel at ease when boxing and believes this is what the sessions can provide.

She said: “I really want the girls to be in a comfortable female setting.

“Girls of this age would never ever have the confidence to step into a boxing club if boys were there.”

The classes which run on Wednesdays between 4.30pm to 5.15pm have already attracted up to 30 girls a week since opening.

Sessions focus in on a variety of skills including pad work and self defence, but most importantly self-control over what they learn.

Elly said: “We want to make sure they don’t take it to the school playground!”

Revenge Boxing Cheshire is one of the only all-female boxing clubs in the area, running a variety of lessons on a weekly basis.

From focusing on the fundamentals of boxing to delivering functional fitness classes, the club is the perfect place for women to learn in a completely non-prejudiced environment.

The ‘Girls with Gloves’ sessions cost £22.50 a month but can be paid for on a monthly basis with no commitment required.
