A CHARACTERFUL pub is to be given a £200,000 new look.

The White Bear on Canute Place in Knutsford will close on Sunday, October 24 for major refurbishment.

Food will be available for the first time in this thatched 18th century pub, and 10 new jobs created when it reopens on November 22.

New licensees Kelly Vickers and Jamie Whittaker believe the investment and new menu will be a big attraction to families.

Kelly said: “We both love Knutsford, it’s such a beautiful town and could immediately see the potential of The White Bear.

"It’s like a country pub transplanted into the town. We noticed there wasn’t much choice for families in the town itself as we have an eight-year-old ourselves and so aim to create the most family friendly upmarket pub in town.

"Having a good-sized beer garden will we hope make it even more appealing.

“We’re really looking forward to getting involved in the community. We are keen to sponsor a local football team in Knutsford and will be putting out feelers when the pub reopens.”

The traditional character of the pub is being retained whilst a lighter look is introduced and seats increased to 86.

Feature wallpaper and more soft furnishings including fabric covered and leather armchairs and upgraded toilets will create a welcoming and comfortable environment.

The kitchen will be completely overhauled and fitted with new equipment.

Pub classics with a twist including pan seared treacled salmon, Guinness and black roasted lamb shank and salt n pepper slow roasted pressed belly pork will be on the menu.

The couple plan to host acoustic live music at weekends and wine tasting and wine matching evenings.

An interactive family quiz will be hosted on Sundays.

Outside, an alfresco eating and drinking area is being created with seating for 60 on a mix of deep cushioned low chairs, cushion covered tub chairs and high wooden bar stools.

A pergola, architectural mirrors and festoon lighting add to the ambience, whilst a wood burner will make it an area to enjoy all year long.

An extensive selection of premium spirits and wines, plus a wide choice of craft beers and quality coffee will be available.

Star Pubs & Bars business development manager Andrew North said: “We’re delighted Jamie and Kelly have taken on the lease of The White Bear.

"They’ve got a great track record having turned around another family friendly local outside Manchester in the last few years, leading to it being awarded five out of five stars on Trip Advisor.

“The pub is in a great town centre location with a new housing development in walking distance.

"Its position and our joint investment together with Jamie and Kelly at the helm will give The White Bear a new lease of life.”

The refurbishment at The white Bear is part of a £38 million investment that Star Pubs & Bars is making in more than 700 pubs in 2021.
