A MOBILE barbershop is offering free head shaves to anyone suffering hair loss due to cancer, or supporting the fight against the battle by shaving their head in solidarity.

Wilmslow’s Dylan Powell, who works in a Mercedes Sprinter van for his salon Gorilla Barber Company, is offering free head shaves to those in a 20-minute catchment area.

People within Knutsford, Alderley Edge, Mobberley, Handforth, Bramhall, Hale, Prestbury Macclesfield and Chelford all qualify for the cut.

It comes after Dylan, 24, had two family members recently diagnosed with cancer and one of them, Katharine, made the choice to get her head shaved.

“I always got told the bigger the problem, if you can fix something, you can help more people out so I saw a big problem there,” he said.

“The reason was she didn’t want to be sitting in a barbers shop and she didn’t want to go to a hairdressers where there is loads of people.

“She actually asked me ‘do you mind if I get it done in the van’. I said ‘of course, anything to help you out’.

How did it make her feel that she was super nervous? “It was tragic,” Dylan said.

“Once we sat down she was obviously extremely, extremely upset, really nervous, she was more worried about what other people thought of her than actually getting it done herself which is obviously the reason for why she didn’t want to get in the shop.

Dylan continued: “I did it and she was still upset, it took her a couple of days to get used to it then she sent me a massive message saying ‘thank you so much, I really appreciate it.’

“It was horrendous at the start, but once it was done and followed through with, it was actually quite a good experience for her in the end.

“Mobile barber means they can get it done outside their own home, so they don’t have to walk around the streets once it has been done. They’re with just myself instead of five or six different people in a barbershop and they get it for free, which is the main idea to help someone out."

It is not just cancer sufferers as well Dylan wants to lend a hand to. Anyone that is shaving their head for charity or fundraising, he wants to help to.

“Even though it’s something very small, one or two per cent in a very difficult situation then that’s the main thing that matters,” he added.

“It makes me feel absolutely incredible. I’m not doing it for myself, I’m doing it for them but it just makes you feel good naturally just helping someone in a very difficult situation.

“Luckily she’s coming out of the other end of it now where she’s fine again, it makes me feel amazing. I want to try and help more people in the future.”
