THE M6 southbound was closed yesterday evening, Wednesday, due to what was being described as a 'serious collision'.

The incident occured at around 4pm between junction 20 for the Lymm Interchange and junction 19 for Knutsford.

Cheshire Police, the North West Ambulance Service and the North West Air Ambulance were in attendance at the scene.

On arrival crews discovered that a saloon car had collided with a bridge and that two people were trapped inside the vehicle.

Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to remove the car's roof.

They then got the casualties out of the vehicle and handed them over to the care of paramedics.

Congestion and long delays was reported, with delays also on the M6 northbound as a result of vehicles slowing to look at the accident on the opposite side.
