SMILING customers and a spending spree have helped Knutsford businesses bounce back to life.

Shops have reported record sales since reopening after lockdown restrictions eased.

Arthur Lee Interiors, the town's oldest family business has been overwhelmed with loyal customers who couldn't wait to return.

Helen Dufton, who owns the store with sister Vicky Wragg, said: "It has been bonkers, we have been so busy.

"It's like the pre Christmas run-up. People have said how much they have missed us and really appreciate us being here. It is very humbling."

The spacious shop in Toft Road, which has 18 showrooms on three floors, celebrated its centenary last year and was founded by their great grandfather Arthur Lee.

"We are so glad to have people wandering round again," said Helen. "We don't sell online because we can't offer the experience of this shop online. We have an eclectic and quirky mix of furniture interior pieces which constantly evolve to inspire you. We've got ever changing stock.

"It is a special place and we are very lucky to have it."

Peter Murray, who owns Pulse of Perfumery in Princess Street, said: "There is a real sense of freedom, you can see it in customers' faces when they come into the shop.

"People tell us they are enjoying being out again."

New faces are constantly turning up as people from miles around discover the town's hidden gems.

"Visitors are coming almost on a daily basis," said Peter. "People are travelling from north Manchester, Shropshire and Lincolnshire. I feel like a town guide as they ask me where to go for something to eat and drink.

"Knutsford will return to a thriving wonderful place. Independent businesses are so passionate about what they do and so knowledgeable about the products they have, they can share it with so many people.

"I want to encourage people to support local businesses now more than ever. I'm looking forward to the next lot of restrictions being lifted on May 17 when we can hopefully enjoy a meal inside one of our fantastic venues."

Customers have been happy to be back at Dexter and Jones in the heart of Knutsford.

Owned by husband and wife team Adam and Katy Rickitt, the shop and bar sells craft beer, artisan gin and fine wine.

While she is overjoyed to be serving people as they relax with a drink, Katy is also delighted for the other businesses which have been able to reopen.

She said: “It’s been absolutely lovely to have everyone back, the sun has been shining and people have been able to see their friends again in our beer garden.

“It’s so nice to say that we’ve got that space.

“It’s nice to see all the businesses getting their customers back, it’s not just about us.

“I think people are really grateful for any sense of normality, so we haven’t had anyone asking about why they can’t sit inside yet.”
