AN MP is demanding Cheshire East Council deliver on a promise to fix a Knutsford road blighted with potholes – four years after residents were told it was a priority.

Beeston Drive has been blighted with uneven surface and potholes for years but families were given hope in 2017 after they were told it was third on the list for repairs and residents expected the road would be repaired within months.

But four years on it appears the criteria for repair and resurfacing has changed, meaning the street may never meet the necessary requirements.

Tatton MP Esther McVey has met with frustrated residents and Knutsford Town Councillor Mike Houghton and is presenting a petition to Cheshire East calling for action.

She said: "This is simply not acceptable.

"In 2017 there was a Conservative administration and Beeston Drive was near the top of the list and rightly so people believed it was going to happen.

"Now the Labour-led Cheshire East council appear to have changed the criteria which rules out repairs on this road.

"It is beyond a joke how a road can be prioritised and then dropped.

"Not only is it unsightly and poses a damage to vehicles, the road has many young families with children who want to ride their bikes but they cannot due to the road being full of holes.

"On one hand Cheshire East are promoting active travel and encouraging residents to get out of the cars and onto bike and on the other they are ignoring the state of this road, preventing families from riding their bikes as it is too dangerous."

It is believed the criteria for resurfacing and pothole repair is that the affected area is 50 mm deep. However, the surface of Beeston Road means it would not meet these strict specifications given the surface is not very deep.

Ms McVey added: "The road is large patches of compacted stone and very little tarmac.

"It is fair to say it is more pothole and exposed base layer than anything else.

"The tarmac is not thick enough to meet the change in requirements but residents are rightly annoyed their road has not been repaired after being promised.

"Whilst I was there, a resident picked up a chunk of tarmac which had just come loose- apparently that is now a regular occurrence.

"The top layer of tarmac is not 50mm deep and that that is hardly the fault of residents.

"I hope the council do the right thing and prioritise the repairs.

"Myself, Mike Houghton and Cheshire East Councillor Stewart Gardiner will keep pushing this issue until it is resolved."

Ms McVey will present the petition arranged by John Gilmore on behalf of all the residents to council bosses.

Cheshire East have been contacted for a comment.
