A KNUTSFORD pub is hoping to revitalise its outdoor area as Covid-19 social restrictions are eased.

The White Bear, on Canute Place, has submitted plans to Cheshire East Council showing extensive re-modelling of the Grade II-listed pub’s beer garden.

The main feature of this area would be a striking U-shaped pergola — as well as a ‘central’ fire pit.

In the application’s design and access statement, the applicant writes: “The design and appearance of the “U” shaped pergola to the perimeter of the courtyard concealed by the boundary wall, with outdoor heaters and lighting, the new central feature of log burning fire pit, new timber posts to support wire suspended LED soft white festoon lighting, will not have a detrimental impact on the existing public house or surrounding area.”

The application also shows other changes, such as the removal of an existing large parasol, replacing cracked concrete floors with ‘granite setts’, relocating the smoking area, and redecorating externally.

The pub dates back to the 16th century, according to the owners, but was altered in the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Pubs and restaurants will be able to open from April 12, but customers will have to sit outside and be from no more than two households or follow the rule of six.

From May 17, customers will be able to sit indoors, with the limits on outdoor party sizes being raised to 30.
