Here are a few key dates and things we noticed about The Wire’s fixture list…

NO TRIP TO FRANCE (FOR FANS AT LEAST):

It is believed that from Round Three onwards, teams will be able to use their own grounds for home fixtures once again.

The Wire are scheduled to travel to Perpignan to face Catalans Dragons on the weekend of April 22-25, when restrictions on travel abroad will still be in place.

Under the current Covid restrictions, sporting exemptions still apply for teams travelling abroad for fixtures so the squad will still be able to fly into and out of France on the day of the game as they usually do.

Warrington have not played in Perpignan since the ill-tempered trip of August 2019 which was marred by violence both on the pitch and in the stands.

THE DATE FANS WILL BE ALLOWED BACK INTO THE HJ:

When the government release their plan to ease lockdown restrictions earlier this week, they said supporters will be allowed back into stadia no earlier than May 17.

If all goes well, that means the Round Seven clash with Castleford Tigers – to be played between May 20 and May 23 – will see the Halliwell Jones Stadium welcome fans again.

That seems somewhat fitting given the last time Wire fans watched their team from inside the stadium was also against the Tigers – a 9-8 victory on March 6 last year.

Wolves have expressed an interest in taking part in any pilot events to trial the safe return of fans – could either of the home games against Hull KR (April 29-May 2) and Huddersfield Giants (May 13-15) provide that chance?

A BUSY JULY:

The seventh month of the year looks to be a stand-out for The Wire – both in terms of fixtures and workload.

It is bookended by double game weekends against neighbours Wigan Warriors and likely play-off contenders Leeds Rhinos and could also include a Challenge Cup Final on July 17.

The Wire are also slated to travel to Hull KR (July 9/10/11) and combined with the first Wigan-Leeds weekend, they could end up playing three times in just seven days.

Their first trip to Leigh Sports Village since 2017 is also on July 22-25.

DOUBLE WEEKS:

Aside from the aforementioned Wigan-Leeds weekends in July, The Wire will face one more double header on the August Bank Holiday Weekend.

August 26/27 will see them travel to Huddersfield before a tasty-looking Bank Holiday Monday clash with St Helens at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on August 30.

CHALLENGE CUP ROUNDS:

The Wire and their Super League rivals will enter a truncated Challenge Cup at the third round stage on the weekend of April 10-11.

No official date has been confirmed for the quarter-finals and semi-finals but there are two gaps in the Super League schedule – the weekends of May 8-9 and June 5-6 – that would appear to fit.

The final will be held at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, July 17.
