SCORES of nominations have come in for an initiative to recognise Wilmslow residents who have provided vital help and support during the nationwide lockdowns.

Between 50 and 60 nominations have been sent to Wilmslow Town Council in only a week after launching its search for the town’s ‘Covid Stars’.

Town clerk Matthew Jackson said: “Wilmslow Town Council knows that without the support of neighbours, friends, local community organisations and local businesses many people in our community would have found it very hard to manage over the last six months.

“These support networks have provided great assistance to members of our community who have needed to shield or self-isolate for long periods since the start of lockdown in March and, in many cases, continue to provide much-needed help in this second lockdown and the likely ongoing restrictions throughout the winter period.

“We believe that the Wilmslow community wishes to recognise, in some small way, the help that has been offered and place on record its collective thanks.

“By completing the form on the town council website you can to tell us who has helped you and a little about what they have done to help.

“The town council is working on when and how these wonderful people and organisations can be recognised over the coming months.”

The council is seeking nominations for people who have made a difference or who stepped up to help others, and is seeking nominations in a number of categories, individuals, community groups, shops, other local businesses and other.

Matthew added: We are asking for nominations to reflect the previous and current lockdown. The chairman had a conversation with one of the councillors some months ago to start thinking about how we could recognise and thank people.

"It's a way of the public recognising those people who have helped them within the community, and we have already had quite a number of nominations come through.

"It has been open a week, and we have had between 50 and 60 nominations, which is very good. I'm not surprised at the number because I know how many people have been helping others.

"Some people have been nominated on numerous occasions, while others have been nominated once.

"That reflects the fact that some people were helping others on a very local basis, and others were more involved in group activities which helped more people.

"We have only had positive feedback about it so far, because I think people do want to thank people, and whatever form that ultimately takes the task of recognising people's efforts is the most important bit, and that's what people want to do."

Residents can nominate someone by visiting the town council website, wilmslow-tc.org.uk/content/stars-wilmslow-during-lockdown, and although there is no deadline people are asked to put forward their nominations as soon as possible.

The council said personal information provided would only be used for the purpose of recognising our Covid Stars and deleted as soon as it was is no longer needed, and information would not be passed to any third parties.
