A NEW sports superstore has opened its doors in Barrow.

Welcoming customers old and new to the store are the team members of Sports Direct, located above the Everlast Fitness Club on Cornmill Park.

This is the second Sports Direct store to set up in the town, with an existing store already based in Barrow’s town centre on Dalton Road.

The Mail:

Sports Direct specialises in all things fitness - with a vast array of trainers, clothing and accessories.

There are plenty of big name brands to choose from for men, women and children.

The store was previously occupied by DW Sports which announced that they would be winding down its retail business for good back in August after its income was wiped out by the closure of stores and gyms during lockdown.

The Mail:

The team of the new Sports Direct store has been made up of the six former DW Sport employees who have been training at the existing shop on Dalton Road in the lead up to the Cornmill Park shop opening its doors.

One of those former employees who has been offered a new lifeline with the opening on the new store is Stephanie Smyth, who has been appointed as the new assistant manager.

Excited for her future within the company, she said: “We have been working in the shop in town for the past five weeks or so and we have slipped right into our new store.

“Through all of the long hours and hard work, a team pulled together within Sports Direct and now the sports shop is back open bigger and better!”

The Mail:

The store was put together after a long and gruelling 60 hour work week with help from staff members from Sports Direct stores in Lancashire.

Supervisor Siobhan Lines said all the hard work had aid off.

She said: “It has been hard work.

“Long days and back breaking at times but we are back in our original store which is nice and familiar for us.

“We have had colleagues from other Sports Direct stores in Lancashire who also helped us a lot with the install.

“It was definitely great working as part of that team.”

The Mail:

Store manager Dave Pointer said: “It was hard work setting up but rewarding to see the final outcome.”

The store will be open Monday to Saturday between the hours of 9.30am and 6pm, and between 10am-4pm on Sundays.

For those working in the NHS, emergency services, the social care sector and the armed forces and who hold a Blue Light Card, there is a 10 per cent discount available. For more information ask the store staff.
