A SEARCH is underway for a family dog who went missing in Chester yesterday (October 19).

Bertie, who is a wirehaired, mini Dachshund cross Jack Russell, got lost after chasing a bird during a walk near the Chester Zoo site.

Animal Search UK 'pet detectives' will be conducting searches of the area where Bertie was last seen, using thermal imaging cameras.

The largest lost and found pet organisation in the UK are also asking residents to keep a lookout for Bertie to help reunite him with his owners.

Owner Isobel, who works for Animal Search UK, said: "He was on a walk behind Chester Zoo with my dad and our other dog. They were running around as usual and chasing each other.

"At some point he has been chasing a bird and has gotten lost. He is a very quiet dog and been brought up during lockdown, so is very wary of people and other dogs, and often barks when they approach."

Chester and District Standard:

Animal Search UK pet detective Andrew McNair added: "Very often cats are found no more than a mile away, but with a dog it is very different.

"They can cover large areas and if confused can get lost. There is also the possibility that Bertie has been taken in by someone, they are a popular breed and it's something we have to consider.

"Our most recent search, we found the dog after five days in the woods so we never give up hope. It’s about being methodical and meticulous."
