The new decade was barely a week old when a crowd of more than 30,000 packed into Vicarage Road to watch one of the most potent strike pairings in the club's history knock Birmingham City out of the FA Cup.

Cliff Holton and Dennis Uphill scored a staggering 84 league and cup goals between them in the 1959/60 season and both were on target on January 9, 1960 as Ron Burgess' side beat Birmingham 2-1 in the third round tie.

A crowd of 31,314 watched the match and thanks to the Watford Treasury, you can scroll through the images on this page and enjoy some of the crowd scenes from that day, including two images that have been colourised to bring them even more to life.

There are also two pictures of the crowd from the first match of the following season, a 2-2 draw against Notts County that was played out in front of more than 16,000 who were at Vicarage Road for Watford's first game in Division Three following their promotion.
