THE rate of coronavirus infection has risen slightly in parts of Cheshire over the past week.

New figures cover the seven day period to August 31, based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community, and show the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent three days (September 1 to 3) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

It shows that in Cheshire East – including Knutsford, Wilmslow and Middlewich – the rate of Covid-19 infection has risen from 8.3 per 100,000 population in the week up to August 24, to 10.9 per 100,000 people.

That follows 42 new confirmed cases of coronavirus in the borough over the week, compared to 32 the week earlier, and puts the borough's infection rate at its highest point in more than a month.

However in Cheshire West, including Northwich and Winsford, the rate of infection has remained fairly static over the past week.

It has fallen from 9 per 100,000 people to 8.7 per 100,000 after 30 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed, compared to 31 in the previous week.

Both boroughs have far lower and more stable rates of infection than some other parts of the north west – particularly Bolton, which has seen its rate soar from 17.4 per 100,000 people to 76.5 per 100,000.
