THE weekly rate of coronavirus infection has risen in some parts of Cheshire and fallen elsewhere.

New figures cover the seven day period to August 24, based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community, and show the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent three days (August 25 to 27) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

In Cheshire West, including Northwich and Winsford, the rate of Covid-19 infection has increased from 5.8 in the week up to August 17 to 7.9 per 100,000 population.

That is the highest rate the borough has had in more than a month, including three consecutive weeks between 5.5 and 5.8 per 100,000 population.

It comes as 27 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in the week up to August 24, compared to 20 in the previous week.

However, in Cheshire East – including Knutsford, Wilmslow and Middlewich – the weekly rate of coronavirus infection fell from 10.4 per 100,000 people in the week up to August 17 to 8.1 in the following week.

That follows 31 new cases in the borough in the week up to August 24, compared to 40 in the previous week.

Both boroughs have a relatively stable rate of infection to other parts of the north west where new Covid-19 cases have been more common.

Pendle, in Lancashire, has the highest rate of coronavirus infection across the country at 57.5 per 100,000 population – but this fell from 81.4 in the previous week.
