STUDENTS at The Grange have wowed their teachers after achieving a stunning set of A-level results despite the uncertainty of the pandemic.

With exams cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, students in England received grades based on teachers' predictions, which were then moderated by exam boards based on past school performance and students' performance.

But the class of 2020 was still able to keep pace with last year's cohort by achieving more than 82 per cent of their grades at A* to B.

Headteacher Deborah Leonard said: "The class of 2020 have shown great resilience through a really challenging time.

"The student is at the heart of our provision and I am delighted that there are so many positive outcomes to celebrate today.

"All of our students leave the school armed with strong results and the impressive skills that a Grange School education offers.

"I am incredibly proud of each and every one of them, especially at a time that they have had to show so much resilience."

Head boy Harry Barker was among the school's highest achievers, picking up a clean sweep of A* grades on his way to studying medicine at Cambridge University.

It's a family affair for the 18-year-old, as he follows in the footsteps of brother Ben, who begins his fourth year on the same six-year course at the prestigious institution.

Harry said: "I am really happy with my results, but getting into Cambridge was the aim for me.

The class of 2020 also excelled outside of the classroom, with this Great Gatsby performance before lockdown

"It is quite a long time now since I stopped learning, so I am looking forward to getting back into the books at Cambridge.

"It will be nice to start there with my brother already there – that added a bit of pressure."

Head girl Orla McEvoy will be taking a gap year before training to be the first dentist in her family.

She was relieved to secure an A* in PE and A grades in biology, chemistry and maths, meaning she can start her dentistry course at the University of Manchester in September 2021.

"It has just been weird more than anything," she said.

"With everything that has been said in the media and after what happened in Scotland it has been quite unsettling, so I was feeling anxious this morning, but now I'm feeling pure relief and excitement.

"I am planning to work for a bit and save some money. I also compete horses and I am just stepping up to internationals, so I will focus on that."

Students have also excelled away from the classroom this year, with the senior netball team reaching national quarter finals, under-19s footballers reaching the Cheshire County Cup final and the cast of The Great Gatsby putting on a stellar live to camera performance before lockdown.

Jamie Walker, head of sixth form, said: "At every point, the class of 2020 have impressed us with their wholehearted approach to Grange School life.

"As well as impressing academically, we have enjoyed celebrating their success in a variety of sporting, dramatic, musical and community activities.

"We have really appreciated their highly significant contribution to our school community and wish them every success in future."
