BOLTON Wanderers legend Ivan Campo ensured one of his fans will have a holiday to remember after agreeing to meet him in Mallorca.

The cult hero, who spent six years with Wanderers after joining the club from Real Madrid, responded to a tweet from Bolton-born supporter Chris Bishop, who has been enjoying a trip to the popular tourist destination.

Chris said: “I’ve been staying in Mallorca on holiday and I tweeted RCD Mallorca, Ivan and Stuart Holden (former Bolton Wanderers player who is now a co-owner of RCD Mallorca) to see whether the club were doing stadium tours.

“Ivan replied and stated he’d happily meet up to sign a shirt. We shared details and arranged to meet one lunchtime.”

Campo, famed for his mop of curly hair, became a hero in Bolton before leaving for Ipswich in 2008, playing 189 games and scoring 14 goals for Sam Alladyce’s side.

“He was a legend from our Premier League days and a true entertainer,” said Chris, who now lives and works in London as a business and marketing consultant.

“I’m in my 30s now but was born into a loyal Wanderers household and I first started going to games in the mid-90s. It was a phenomenal gesture for him to take the time out of his day to meet and sign an old shirt - luckily I decided to bring the old maroon kit as a top for the gym. I’ll now need to get it framed!”

Chris was amazed when the 46-year-old midfielder agreed to show him around RCD Mallorca’s stadium.

He said: “Even the RCD Mallorca staff were unsure whether we’d be allowed in, due to Covid-19 protocols as well as the fact the club were announcing their new manager that day.

"But, as soon as Ivan arrived he quickly spoke to someone on the phone and we were ushered into the Son Moix Stadium.”

The ex-Spanish international also took the time to talk to Chris about Wanderers’ current problems before reminiscing about his career.

“Ivan stated we are not where the club should be,” added Chris. “We spoke more about his fond memories and the great teammates he had and as he signed my Wanderers kit we both discussed that Blackburn away goal he scored wearing the jersey as well as Jussi Jääskeläinen’s double penalty saves.

"He was happy to chat and spoke about his love for the Bolton fans and how he enjoyed playing at The Reebok. He even sent a video message to my mum!”
