AN armed forces veteran has retired from his wheelchair and sitski world record attempts following a shock injury during his latest challenge.
Ste Hughes, from Appleton, was using a para Nordic roller sitski to complete the gruelling 874-miles from John o' Groats to Land's End.
The 51-year-old, who was injured in service and underwent three spinal operations and four brain surgeries, was raising money for Bike Tours for the Wounded, his Armed Forces Hub and Holidays for Heroes Jersey.
"I was 80 miles from the end and on target when I flipped my rip and punctured my shoulder and broke my collar bone," Ste said.
"To say I am gutted is an understatement.
"I am now retiring.
"Thank you to all those who have supported me on my journey - I am humbled."
Ste is now awaiting further surgery for a plate to be put in his shoulder.
The former soldier has proven himself to be a determined adaptive sports athlete throughout his career, setting the fastest time travelled from coast to coast in a wheelchair in 2018 and completing a wheelchair 10k in 2017.
In April 2019 he also broke the official Guinness World Record of pushing from Land's End to John o' Groats in a manual wheelchair.
Ste is still collecting donations for his chosen charities.
