WILMSLOW High School is set for a major makeover to help it cope with the increasing number of pupils at the school.

The school is earmarked for two extensions and internal alterations to enable it to increase admissions per year group from 300 to 360.

Plans have been submitted to Cheshire East Council which would see the school expand to become a 12-form entry school and sixth form.

The scheme would see the building of a single-storey extension to include a new main pupil and visitor entrance, new administration spaces, student services, reprographics and new DT spaces.

The extension would be created where an existing DT building is due to be demolished and visitor parking, a refuse store and entrance landscaping are located.

A separate two-storey building between the sports halls would provide a new community sport entrance and reception, new changing facilities, fitness suite, three classrooms, new movement studio and viewing gallery.

A report with the planning application said the local authority had always received more applications than the 300 places available per year group, and to satisfy as many parental preferences for local children as possible for the past three years it had admitted above the school’s Published Admission Number (PAN) of 300 for year 7 entry.

Based on a PAN of 300 the school’s current capacity for year groups 7 to 11 is 1,500, but the October 2019 census shows 1,610 on roll.

“The local authority and the school are aware the proposed increase does not appear to completely remove the indicated shortfall,” said the report.

“However, it will allow some flexibility to monitor the housing developments and respond to changes in provision as required.

“The areas of new build and alterations are located to allow departments to be grouped together and provide a new contemporary frontage for the main school entrance and for the community sports facilities entrance.”

The proposals include an area for 30 parking spaces, parking for 140 cycles with future provision for an additional 60, staff cycle parking and a new pupil drop-off area.

Access into the site is proposed to be amended to allow for a temporary parking area for coaches for use with school trips.

To allow for the construction work and for the school to remain open during the works, temporary classrooms are required. Planning permission is to be sought for these under a separate application.
