THE leader of Cheshire East Council says it is ‘vital we are prepared’ for a potential second peak of coronavirus.

Cllr Sam Corcoran, Labour, has welcomed the forming of a new group covering the boroughs of Cheshire East, West, Halton and Warrington to monitor possible outbreaks across the entire county.

All four councils’ leaders will work alongside David Keane, Cheshire’s police and crime commissioner, and the local enterprise partnership to form an effective continued response to Covid-19.

It is hoped the close collaboration will prevent local lockdowns, such as the one seen in Leicester, while protecting lives and livelihoods.

Cllr Corcoran said: “We understand that the UK has passed the peak of Covid-19 transmission, case numbers have been decreasing and some restrictions have relaxed.

“However, we have seen some local authorities, such as Leicester, battle against rising numbers and experience a local lockdown.

“There are nationwide worries of a second peak, especially during the winter months, so it’s vital that we are prepared.

“Working closely with our neighbouring local authorities and key partners will provide a strong, co-ordinated approach on any local outbreaks that may occur.”

The group is designed to provide collective political leadership in response to Covid-19 outbreaks, ensure police can respond to them consistently and to share information on outbreaks and lockdowns.

All representatives will learn from the experiences of each other and work to protect the county’s economy, while also cooperating with neighbouring regions.

Cllr Corcoran added: “Having clear lines of communication, sharing best practice and mutual support will enable the Cheshire Covid-19 outbreak response co-ordination group to work together and protect not only our own local communities, but all those Cheshire wide.”

If you have coronavirus symptoms, book a test by calling 119 and self-isolate for 14 days.
