A CONWY charity has been blessed with a fiver figure windfall.

The Conwy County volunteer group for Marie Curie were delighted to receive the news last month that their application to be chosen to benefit from a recycling scheme, run by the Colwyn Bay Crematorium, had been successful and they were to be awarded £10,000.

Andy Barlow from the Colwyn Bay Crematorium said “As members of the ICCM Recycling of metals scheme, we all at Colwyn Bay Crematorium are delighted to be able to present Marie Curie Charity with a cheque for £10,000."

The last few months have been a challenging time for the charity who provides hands on nursing care to those facing terminal illness such as Motor Neurone Disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease , Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Terminal Cancer, and now Covid19.

North Wales Pioneer:

The 12 strong team of Marie Curie volunteers

The Conwy group formed more than eight years ago, and is made up of 12 local volunteers who and have raised nearly £170,000 for the charity in this time. Until recently would meet monthly in the Asda community rooms but now meet on a regular zoom call, with their objective to raise awareness of the Marie Curie Services across the area, and raise funds to support those services.

Mr Barlow added: "This donation really couldn’t have come at a better time for Marie Curie as like many of other wonderful charities, their fantastic nurses continue to work on the frontline during these difficult times of the Covid -19 Pandemic with limited ways of trying to raise funds so they can continue to help people and also their families through their difficult times of illness.

"Their nurses provide one to one care for people in their own homes and also support the local Nursing Service operating from Glan Clwyd Hospital as well as much, much more.”
