MIKE Amesbury is urging the government give Northwich town centre a post-lockdown boost by investing in a new market.

Earlier this month, Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership was asked by ministers to come up with a list of new or existing capital projects which – If approved – could see £50 million worth of works carried out across the region.

One of the schemes put forward was to create a larger and more diverse Northwich market facility which would act as a catalyst for the redevelopment of Weaver Square.

Mike Amesbury, Labour MP for Weaver Vale, has written to the government in support of the plans and called on the government to give the Northwich proposals the green light.

Mike said: “This is something myself and local councilors have been calling for for some time and I sincerely hope the government will take this opportunity to do something truly transformative that will be a boost not only to Northwich, but the wider sub-regional economy too.

“This is about building back better, not being sucked into yet more damaging austerity which simply doesn’t work.

“Now is the time for the government to be bold, invest in our town centre so we can retain and create jobs and boost the local economy, just when Northwich needs it most.”

Demolition work is due to begin next week at the old covered market building, which was ravaged by fire earlier this year.

A new market area featured in the most recent masterplan for Weaver Square's regeneration, and is seen as a key part of the project by Cheshire West and Chester Council.
