A BABY has reportedly died at Styal Prison, the second to have died in a UK prison in the space of nine months.
HM Prison Service has confirmed the stillbirth took place on Thursday, June 18.
According to The Guardian, the woman had been given paracetamol after complaining of severe stomach pains for several days.
Neither she nor prison staff were aware of her pregnancy until she went into labour on the toilet, where she was then assisted by prison and healthcare staff, the national newspaper says.
A spokesman for HM Prison Service told The Guardian: “Our thoughts are with the woman who endured this tragic ordeal.
“She is being fully supported by prison and healthcare staff during this difficult time.”
The death follows another stillbirth which took place at HMP Bronzefield, in Surrey, last October.
