YOUNG women from Winsford are being given the chance to apply for the opportunity of a lifetime to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Active Cheshire is sending three women aged 19 to 25 to Africa's tallest mountain, in Tanzania.

Only women from one of Cheshire's least active towns – Winsford, Crewe, Warrington, Macclesfield and Ellesmere Port – are eligible to apply.

To be in with a chance of climbing Kilimanjaro, applicants are required to raise funds for Warrington Youth Club, which supports youngsters through a wide range of programmes.

They also need to submit a compelling video application to prove why they should be selected – demonstrating values such as commitment, courage and the spirit of adventure.

It comes as recent research from Public Health England found one in four women in England are classed as physically inactive, while 42 per cent get less than 30 minutes' exercise a week.

A spokesman for Active Cheshire said: "This frightening figure combined with the lockdown made Active Cheshire and Warrington Youth Club create Active Adventures, where a legacy is created to inspire and encourage individuals to overcome challenges in order to achieve greatness.

"To help inspire others to move more, face challenges head on and break down barriers, Active Cheshire and Warrington Youth Club are going to provide these women support and funding to tackle one of the toughest challenges they will ever do.

"Active Cheshire aims to create something lasting which will impact on people’s lives in a positive way. These women will look to do this through the length of their journey."
