THIS year’s Goostrey Rose Day has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Christina Burgess, chairman of Goostrey Rose Festival committee said: “In view of the coronavirus pandemic and consequent uncertainties about what activities people will be able to take part in over the next few months, committee members felt they had no option but to cancel the event.

“Rose Day has been an important community event in our village for over 100 years, and the last time it was cancelled was during the Second World War.

“The committee’s decision was made more poignant by the fact that in the last few weeks the Rose Queen, Rosebud Queen and their attendants for 2020 were chosen and many local children have registered for the procession.

“It is also disappointing that the South African children and their teachers will not be visiting this year.

“At present we can see no reason why Rose Day will not take place in 2021, but a smaller event before that may be possible. Thank you to everyone for their support and understanding.”
