IT’S never too late to enjoy your passion in life. And that is exactly what 85-year-old George Tyrell discovered when he put on his dancing shoes once more.

George, who is a resident at the Brookview Bupa Care Home in Alderley Edge, relived his youthful dancing days at The Plumley Village Hall Tea Dance.

The former champion dancer first recognised his love for dance at a young age and went on to join a dancing school. His ability went from strength to strength as he won multiple medals, despite having a physical disability.

After hearing all about his former passion, care home staff arranged for him to attend the dance as part of the home’s ‘Never Too Late’ initiative, which encourages residents to live life to the full, while setting and achieving new goals.

Collette Mills, activities coordinator at the home, said: “We all love hearing George’s stories from his dancing days and he absolutely lights up when he tells them. That’s why we wanted to arrange this surprise for him to attend a dance event once more.”

After the dance, George spoke of his love for his old hobby and said that he enjoyed it just as much as he used to.

He said: “I loved dancing when I was younger, and it was an amazing experience to be able to go back to the Village Hall and enjoy myself. I might not be able to dance as well as I could when I was younger, but it still felt just as good.”

Up and down the country, the Never Too Late campaign has seen staff put smiles on residents’ faces by organising treats from a romantic meal for a husband and wife to helping an RAF veteran return to the skies.

Sharon Short, home manager, added: “We all really enjoy hearing George’s stories about his dancing days. Being able to see his face light up when he entered the hall was heart-warming.

“The #Nevertoolate campaign has really opened up these opportunities for our residents, just because they’re getting older doesn’t mean they don’t like to have fun.

“We have a great time here, and we’re happy to make the residents’ lives better in any way we can.”
