A WIRRAL councillor's suspension from the Labour Party has been lifted.

Cllr Jo Bird – an elected member for Bromborough - was suspended from the party for a second time earlier this month.

But this has now been lifted.

Last year Cllr Bird was suspended – and then reinstated – for making a joke about 'jew process’'

It is unclear at this stage exactly what this latest suspension was for.

Speaking about her reinstatement this week, Cllr Bird, who is Jewish herself, said: "My Jewish great grandparents were refugees from fascism in Europe.

"There is no place for antisemitism or any form of racism in our party. Our diverse society and world needs more understanding and less hostility.

"Party members need fair disciplinary processes worthy of our trade union and Labour values – demonstrating better consideration for the wellbeing of the accused alongside natural justice."

Back in October, Cllr Bird explained the 'Jew process' joke to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

She said: "The Jewish Chronicle attacked me, quoting a speech I made on anti-racism, including a play on words, 'due/Jew process'.

"I said I am sorry for any offence caused – that was not my intention."

Cllr Bird is known for her campaigning on justice for victims of the New Ferry gas explosion and is widely seen to be on the left of the party.

She is currently vying for a position on Labour’s National Executive Committee – the party’s ruling body.
