Some households have been left with no water or just a trickle since the leak at around 8am.

Engineers from United Utilities have now completed repairs and water supplies should be returning to normal.

A United Utilities statement at 3.19pm had said: "Just to let you know, we’re still repairing the leak at Victoria Road which is taking longer than expected.

"Thanks for your patience, we’re working as fast as we can and hope to have your taps flowing again very soon. We will update this message once the repair is complete."

An earlier statement had said: "A leak on Victoria Road has been identified. We’ve been out to investigate and found this to be the cause for some of you having no water or just a trickle.

"Our leakage engineers should be on site as soon as possible. We’re sorry for the disruption and thank you for your patience."
