RESIDENTS in Winsford face an increase of 6 per cent in their council tax precept this year.

Winsford Town Council approved their draft budget for 2020/21 at a meeting on Monday evening.

The rise will cost the majority of the town's taxpayers £3.40 a year or 6p a week, and councillors say is still one of the lowest precepts in the borough.

The proposed precept of £536,393 could see council tax for Band D properties rise from £56.65 to £60.05.

The final figures will be ratified at a meeting next month.

Cllr Joanne Moorcroft, chairman of Winsford Labour team, told members: "I believe this budget sets out a positive and transformative programme and demonstrates remarkable value.

"The improvements will cost the majority of Winsford taxpayers no more than £3.40 extra per year.

"The government doesn't fund services properly, meaning that Winsford Town Council along with the borough council and the police have no option but to increase taxes."
